SANTA FE, N.M. - July 6, 2009 - Santa Fe is famous for many things - art, architecture, history, culinary, natural beauty, culture - but skiing is one infamously overlooked attraction that makes Santa Fe a snow enthusiast's powder perfect secret. With 660 skiable acres, a 12,075 foot summit elevation, and an average of 225 inches of annual snowfall, Santa Fe's diverse terrain gives skiers and snowboarders endless miles of challenging trails and panoramic vistas all within 20 minutes of downtown Santa Fe. While the City Different's cachet has undeniable tourist allure, the Inn and Spa at Loretto strengthens this draw by adding some pocketbook appeal with its anniversary inspired, early ski deal. The Ski Santa Fe 400th Anniversary package includes two nights lodging, four all-day lift tickets, $40 food and beverage credit and free parking and is available starting at $646. Guests who book this package by Sept. 30, 2009, can add one additional night for only 400 cents.
Santa Fe Ski Basin opened around 1950, after the first operator constructed a rope towline from airplane seats and mining cables, affectionately referred to as The Red Chair. Preceding The Basin were Hyde Park and Big Tesuque ski areas. Both opened around 1940, were closed during World War II, and reopened in 1946. There must be something about a towline that encourages ingenuity, for Big Tesuque's rope tow was run by a big Cadillac car.
But even a Cadillac is no match for today's slope transportation at Santa Fe Ski Basin with the new Millennium Triple Chairlift that soars to the 12,075-foot summit. The Sangre de Cristo mountain range provides a base elevation of 10,350 feet, making it one of the highest ski areas in the country, including 1,725 vertical feet of skiing. The ski gods blessed the slopes with steep bump runs, powder filled chutes, tree glades and plenty of corduroy, with 69 runs for all levels of expertise. Seven lifts, with a lift capacity of 9,350 people per hour, ensure no one wastes time in lift lines. Off mountain, snowshoe and cross-country ski enthusiasts can traverse Aspen Vista Trail and the Nordic Trail on Hyde Park Road or take on the rolling terrain in the Valles Caldera National Preserve, a volcanic caldera in the Jemez Mountains.
Unlike popular ski destinations like Aspen or Vail, Santa Fe Ski Basin offers comparable thrills but at a much more affordable price point. In 2008/2009, one day lift tickets in Aspen were $92 for adults and $68 for children. In Vail, they were $97 for adults and $61 for children. For the price of one adult lift ticket in Aspen or Vail, families in Santa Fe can purchase both an adult ($58) and a child's ($40) lift ticket. In addition to great savings, snow enthusiasts can also enjoy an array of perks including small lift lines, a freestyle terrain park, Children's Adventure Land, recreational racing, Chipmunk Corner Children's Center and a PSIA Certified Ski School all within The Land of Enchantment's memorable city limits.
