Thoughts on Riesling from Luminaria’s Wine Expert

Riesling wine originated in Germany’s Rhein and Mosel river valleys. These vineyards are said to be the steepest in the world and also the coldest. The precious grapes are specifically planted on the south-facing slopes to acquire only a few hours per day of sun exposure. The rareness is the slate that the vines live in, retaining heat at their roots that assists the ripening. This lends to the wet stone minerality of a Riesling.

Rieslings are known as the wine world's newest sweetheart. Extremely dynamic, ranging from dry to sweet, light to full-bodied, and exceptionally food friendly. Riesling wines are highly fragrant with apple, peach, and pear at the forefront mixed with delicate floral undertones and often honey and spice on the nose. On the palate, Rieslings echo the fruit along with citrus and tropical hints. They are able to stand up to the strongest flavors of spices and equally compliments the intense flavors of the Southwest. Next time you’re enjoying Luminaria’s Pork Tacos ask for a glass of Markus Molitor’s 2010 Riesling. Enjoy!
