The Journey IS the Reward: In search of lost treasures in Santa Fe, NM

It’s been a over four years since noted author and archaeologist Forrest Fenn hid his infamous treasure somewhere in the Rocky Mountains. Since the announcement travelers from around the world have flocked to Santa Fe and Northern New Mexico in search of riches said to be worth over $2 million.

While the treasure is still waiting to be found, we have to wonder, is the real reward the journey? Travelers who’ve come to conquer end up being conquered themselves by the unequivocal enchantment of Santa Fe. They come seeking monetary fulfillment, yet leave with priceless memories to last a lifetime. Perhaps on purpose, or perhaps a spectacular serendipitous twist of fate – this treasure hunt is connecting people in a way no pot of gold could. And Santa Fe Hotels are seeing a resurgence of families coming to enjoy this modern day Indiana Jones style adventure. So when bloggers Billie Frank and Steve Collins asked Mr. Fenn if this was his intention all along, we were delighted that his reply confirmed our suspicions.

“Fenn told us last year that one of the reasons he hid the treasure was to bring families together to search for it. He wanted “to get kids off the couch and out of the game room and into the sunshine.” It’s not only families out hunting for the treasure; strangers are coming together, both online and in person, to discuss the clues. “People are being drawn together and I didn’t anticipate that to the degree it’s happening.” (excerpt from Forrest Fenn: The Thrill of the Chase Redux on

So whether you’re in search of actual treasure, or just some great family fun, you’ll find your reward hidden in your unforgettable journey. A reward so sweet no pot of gold could out shine it (ok, maybe $2 million might do the trick). Either way, you’ll have some great memories to share for generations to come!
