When Suzanne Chavez, spa director at The Spa at Loretto, was developing the first aromatherapy oils for our signature, handmade massage oils, she wanted simple and effective. Her inspiration was the natural beauty of Santa Fe and the earthy, spiritual nature of its inhabitants. She considered the elements and the properties of each; then matched the aroma counterpart with what that element represented.
The Significance of the 5 Elements
- Earth – grounding and calming
- Air- inspiration and energy
- Water – emotional balance and peace
- Fire - joy and heart opening
- Spirit – reflection and meditation
This process led to the development of many of the Spa’s signature oils. When guests experienced the luxurious essence and healing nature of these oils they began requesting mixtures for specific needs. Take for example, the “high altitude” relief oil. Considering that Santa Fe sits at an elevation of 7,000 ft., guests were naturally inquiring about oils that would alleviate altitude sickness. Several of the blends had properties that would be helpful, but did not deal with the symptoms directly. So Suzanne developed the High Altitude Bath and Body Oil which is now one of the Spa’s most popular varieties for travelers and locals alike.
Likewise, for the second year in a row and back by popular demand, is the seasonal “winter” oil. Infused with forest pine, citrus and hints of cinnamon, this blend is designed to alleviate sinus pressure, dry skin and inflammation– all of which are great benefits for the harsh winter months. With scents reminiscent of snowy evenings in Santa Fe cuddled by a fire with a steaming cup of cocoa or warm sangria, this oil is sure to cure the winter blues!
Booking a spa treatment with one of the many talented therapists is the best way to reap the full benefits of these oils. Each treatment is attuned to your personal needs. Your therapist will consult with you prior to the treatment to create the perfect mix of oils to soothe your body, relax your mind and refresh your soul.
If a Spa day is not in your near future, you can also purchase a bottle from our retail shelf. All oils are handcrafted by Suzanne using premium organic ingredients and bottled in sustainable recycled glass bottles – offering the perfect opportunity for a little at home pampering.
