Summer Art and Gallery Guide - Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe is continually recognized as one of the top art markets in the country – sharing the spotlight with such notable cities as New York, Boston and L.A.  With the abundance of fine, contemporary and Native art, as well as an extraordinary assembly of international art markets, it’s no wonder travelers come from all over the world to experience Santa Fe’s creative culture.  And one of the best times for an art-full escape is summer of course! The streets are lively with locals and travelers alike, all in search of the perfect new piece to add to their collection. Santa Fe galleries are keen on showing off the newest work by their artists, and Friday night openings always draw impressive crowds of collectors, art lovers and bourgeoisie. Museum Musings

Up right now through May 2016 is a compelling exhibition at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture titled Turquoise, Water, Sky: The Stone and Its Meaning.  View the museum’s extensive collection of Southwestern Turquoise Jewelry and learn about history of the stone itself, issues of authenticity, and its value.

Opening June 6th at the New Mexico Museum of Art is a one-woman show Local Color: Judy Chicago in New Mexico 1984-2014.  The art addresses the complexity of gender and includes recent paintings and drawings created in New Mexico by feminist artist Judy Chicago. The exhibition is up through September 2014.

July 19 SITE Santa Fe launches its newest biennial exhibition Unsettled Landscapes.  Contemporary artists collaborate to create an engaging and thought provoking, cutting edge art exhibition up through Jan 11, 2015.  Unsettled Landscapes explores cultural and artistic perspectives of the Western Hemisphere from Nunavut to Tierra del Fuego.

Festival Favorites

Currents New Media Festival June 13-29 an exhibition of fine art video installations held at El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe.  Installations are often interactive.  This is an exhibition you will not want to miss and fun for the whole family.

ART Santa Fe, a sophisticated international art fair hosted at the Santa Fe Convention Center July 10-13.  Rub shoulders with Santa Fe’s contemporary and modern art scene lovers. That same weekend you will also find the International Folk Art Market.  Come and purchase handcrafted creations by international artists.  This is a UNESCO event helping artisans from all over the globe.  Come and meet the artists and join in the festivities including craft, art, dance, music, international cuisine and children’s activities.

July 25-27 The Santa Fe Spanish Colonial Arts Society brings the Traditional & Contemporary Spanish Market to the Santa Fe Plaza. The annual market pays tribute to Spanish Colonial arts and culture, with several hundred artists selling Santos, handmade furniture, jewelry, weavings and more.

In August you will find several special art markets. Objects of Art Santa Fe Show at El Museo Cultural from August 15 -17.  This exhibition features antique books, textiles, and tribal, folk, American Indian, African and Asian Art.  65 dealers will bring an impressive variety of objects of art for your viewing pleasure.  You may even find a treasure to take home with you. 

Santa Fe’s biggest Native Arts weekend is August 20-24.  This year you will find a plethora of activities to keep your visual juices flowing. SWAIA Indian Market on the Plaza is in its 93rd year.  The newest addition to the weekend of events is the Indigenous Fine Art Market at the Railyard.  The Museum of Contemporary Native Art is featuring exhibitions by three artists:  Ric Gendron, Mario Martinez & Courtney M. Leonard. MoCNA is a hub of activity. Of course, you will find that many galleries and art dealers are holding special events for this weekend.  If you want to learn about the newest contemporary Native Artists head on over to Winterowd Fine Art on Canyon Road for a special exhibition titled Modern Illusions in Native American Art.
