Loretto's Enchanted "Made in New Mexico" Christmas Tree

While Santa Fe is a great place to visit year-round, no time is quite as revered as Christmas in the City Different. Maybe it’s the mingling of old-world cultures, twinkling Farolitos and billowing white snow that enchants our city at this special time of the year. Or maybe it’s the aromas of Biscochitos, homemade Chile (Christmas style of course) and warm bowls of Posole. Whatever it is, Christmas in Santa Fe is truly magic.

This year the Inn and Spa at Loretto wanted to highlight the local spirit of Christmas for our friends and guests. Thus was born what we hope will be a lasting annual tradition – Loretto’s Enchanted “Made in New Mexico” Christmas tree. We brought together the best of Santa Fe holiday makers to help us realize our vision, and the outcome truly is enchanting.

Our tree was exclusively designed by local holiday icon Susan Topp Weber of Susan’s Christmas Shop and noted local designer Glynn Gomez. Susan and Glynn spent countless hours selecting and placing every ornament using all local, hand-made decorations from New Mexico artists. Each ornament tells a story and connects the viewer with the traditions and heritage of our past, present and future. Santa Fe’s Native American history is represented by delicate ornaments that showcase traditional designs and techniques from the surrounding Pueblos; like the Navajo sand painted spheres and the Cochiti Pueblo clay figurines.  The City Different’s Spanish Colonial heritage is remembered through handmade replicas of New Mexico’s historic churches and missions. And our modern Anglo history is embraced with hand painted Red Chile pods that commemorate a daughter’s admiration for her mother’s love of Christmas.

We invite you discover the beauty of the holidays and the richness of our culture through the artistry that each ornament beholds. Below you will find images and information about the stunning collection that adorns our tree. It is our hope that you too will find the magic of Christmas in Santa Fe nestled among the branches of our “Enchanted Tree.”

About the Ornaments:

These delicate glass balls were hand-painted by Navajo artist Melinda Smith-Watchman using the traditional Navajo technique of sand painting.

These colorful glass balls are all hand-painted by Santo Domingo Pueblo artist Angel Bailon depicting original designs from the Santo Domino Pueblo.

Cochiti Pueblo artist Pamela Quintana hand-paints and molds these angles using traditional Cochiti pottery making methods.

Local artist Carolyn Johnson has been hand-making these delicate churches for over a decade. She currently has over 50 models in her collection—all representing historic churches and missions from around New Mexico.

Melissa Rose Weber, daughter of beloved shop owner Susan Topp Weber of Susan’s Christmas shop, dries, dips and hand-paints these charming Red Chile pods.

All ornaments featured here can be purchased at Susan’s Christmas Shop located just a few blocks from the Inn and Spa at Loretto at 115 East Palace Ave.

The Inn and Spa at Loretto would like to thank Susan Topp Weber and Glynn Gomez for designing and decorating our amazing tree!
